The Doctors at the Eye Institute of Southern Arizona

Barry Kusman M.D., F.A.C.S

Dr. Kusman graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand School of Medicine in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1973.  Following three years of practice in internal medicine, he completed a fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at Georgetown University in 1977.  Dr. Kusman completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Florida College of Medicine in 1980 and a fellowship in anterior segment surgery at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida the following year.

In 1981, Drs. Kusman and Katz designed and built the Eye Institute of Southern Arizona, the first ophthalmic ambulatory surgical center in Tucson and one of only a few in the United States at the time.

Dr. Kusman is an experienced ophthalmic surgeon who specializes in microsurgery of the eye and is an expert in corneal, cataract and refractive vision correction surgery.  He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons.  Dr. Kusman is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and a charter member of the International Association of Ocular Surgeons.  He was listed in Who’s Who in the State of Arizona in 1984-1985 and 1989-1990.

In 1984, Dr. Kusman was appointed to the faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology, at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, where he continues to hold this position.  He was also Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology at El Dorado Hospital Medical Center from 1983 to1987.

Dr. Kusman is the founder and Medical Director of the Visual Expressions Skin Care Center, which was established in 2002 as a state-of-the-art center for skin rejuvenation and aesthetics.  He is a certified Medical Laser Technician and Laser Safety Officer.  Dr. Kusman personally administers Botox® Cosmetic as well as dermal fillers and was a clinical researcher for the Swedish company Pharmacia, which developed sodium hyaluronic acid for use in ophthalmology and facial enhancement surgery.  His extensive experience using this viscoelastic substance spans over 25 years.

Dr. Kusman has authored numerous medical articles and lectures both nationally and internationally.  He is an active member of the Tucson community and enjoys spending time with his family, art and sculpture, music, tennis and scuba diving.
